Most of the people living in England’s 1600’s did not know much about science, so any event out of the ordinary or which eventually had a bad outcome, was attributed to the work of the devil, or somewhat being connected to it. In cases like these, scapegoats were needed to take the blame, so witches or anybody connected to any out of ordinary practices, became a suspect.
With the beginning of King’s James I reign, who wrote a book about witches and how they can be identified, the powers of the time excelled into hunting witches and passing death penalties on rarely strong founded charges.
In Pendle (Lancashire) in 1612, a group of 19 people (mostly women), were found guilty of practising witchcraft and hung. The whole accusation was based on the confession of a nine-year-old girl. The accused people were poor peasants, mostly brought together by old disputes and didn’t have access to any representation.
The Witches of Pendle case later became famous and many stories were written about the actual events and the evidence presented. Almost 400 years later, the story of the Witches of Pendle is still alive in the Lancashire hills, and there is also a campaign aimed at pardoning them.
The story is captured in many artefacts – our Witches of Pendle dolls are a vivid representation of some of the characters of that time. Each collectable porcelain doll has its own exquisite beauty; hey are not toys for children, but porcelain figurines for adult collections. Each porcelain doll is a realistic, hand-crafted new creation, born from the meticulous diligence and eye for detail of artisans.
The witch dolls are recommended for collectors, connoisseurs and admirers of fine craftsmanship, and should be treated with the same care and respect that went into their creation.
